Dyson Fights Bosch Again

Dyson faces off against Bosch in the competitive world of cordless vacuums.

By Denny You

Key Points
  • Dyson continues to challenge established appliance brands like Bosch.
  • Innovation and design remain Dyson's core competitive advantages.
  • Legal battles are part of the competition in the high-tech appliance market.
Dyson Fights Bosch Again

Previously, I introduced Bosch's wireless charging product Unlimited, which is an attempt by the company to integrate its appliance and power tool battery platforms.

For more details, see this link.

This product has two key features:

  1. It can be used with the 18V power tool platform. This allows for the interchangeability of batteries between the new Unlimited cordless vacuum cleaner and 18V power tools, thereby binding consumers to the Bosch ecosystem.
  1. Fast charging technology allows a battery to be fully charged in just 45 minutes. At the lowest power setting, this product can operate for up to 60 minutes before needing a recharge, with a 45-minute charge time. This means that one battery can be used while another is being charged, which aligns with Bosch's marketing claims of "Continuous runtime" and "infinite runtime."

Recently, Dyson lodged a complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) in the UK regarding Bosch's claims of "Continuous runtime" and "infinite runtime" for their vacuum cleaners, alleging that these terms were misleading to consumers.

Bosch stated that the terms "Continuous runtime" and "infinite runtime" on their advertisements are clear and not misleading. The company explained that their product features two batteries; one is in use while the other charges, ensuring continuous operation without interruption due to battery depletion.

Furthermore, Bosch noted that independent tests showed the batteries were replaced seven times before the total operational time reached 235 minutes, nearly four hours, at the end of testing.

The ASA concluded that consumers can understand "Continuous" and "infinite" runtime as referring to the ability to keep the vacuum cleaner running by swapping out batteries in normal operating mode. Therefore, they deemed these terms acceptable.

In response, a Dyson spokesperson stated:

>"Dyson always takes action when we believe consumers are being misled.

>We will continue to challenge our competitors on this and are reviewing the options available to us."

It is clear that Dyson's influence in the vacuum cleaner market continues to grow. On one hand, they heavily invest in advertising to position their products as the best on the market. On the other hand, they frequently use legal means to prevent competition.

This war shows no signs of stopping:

>"Dyson is watching you."
