iRobot's Potential Exit and the Impact on the Industry

Today, I came across a report from Leiphone stating that iRobot might be delisted and is considering merging with Dolphin Robotics, a leading robotic pool cleaner company, to form a super channel alliance spanning cleaning and outdoor maintenance services, potentially becoming the global leader in this domain.

Upon hearing this news, I consulted some friends. They mentioned that since last year, iRobot has indeed been involved in capital operations, which are being handled by their American team, with no significant developments reported from China.

If this merger were to happen, what impact would it have on the industry? Most weak alliances tend to remain unnoticed. Let's analyze the situation:

iRobot and DJI market transition map

Firstly, iRobot’s current market value is less than one billion dollars, and its sales have been declining for several years. The core issue lies in product obsolescence, lack of competitiveness, and insufficient product innovation rather than inadequate distribution channels. From a product perspective, iRobot lags behind domestic giants by 2-3 years, with these companies continuously iterating to widen the gap.

Currently, the only potential solution is a change at the highest level followed by the development of competitive products based on actual market conditions.

For iRobot, the best course would be an acquisition. Shark Navigations and TTI Group are good candidates as they have the capability to leverage iRobot’s brand and patent technology effectively.

Now let's look at Dolphin Robotics. While its current state is not as dire as iRobot’s, it still faces significant competition from companies like Aiper Intelligent and Beatbot Innovation. From a product perspective, Dolphin’s offerings also pose risks. Essentially, Dolphin represents where iRobot was three years ago; if Chinese companies continue to develop, they will become formidable competitors.

These two companies do not share overlapping products. If iRobot were to enter the lawn mowing market, it could align with other outdoor robotic solutions. However, Terra Drone has been working on this for several years without much success, and even now, its offerings lack competitiveness. From a channel perspective, their distribution networks are different and unlikely to be shared effectively.

Thus, such a merger would not likely result in 1+1>2 synergy, making the combination less meaningful. Most weak alliances have little impact on the industry.

Yesterday, another piece of news emerged: DJI officially announced that its robot vacuum ROMO will launch on August 6th. From the images provided, there are two designs—one with a transparent shell and one in white. Initially, I thought the transparent shell was an engineering prototype for filming purposes, but my supply chain contacts informed me it is indeed the final production version.

So, DJI plans to release both the transparent and white versions? Previously, when I shared photos of the transparent shell in a video, DJI contacted me about the content. This is unnecessary; if such issues arise again, please just message me privately or remove the video yourself.

Additionally, there are some supply chain updates for reference: DJI’s initial order quantity was around 10,000 units. The delay was due to motor issues, which have now been resolved.

What impact will DJI's entry into this market have? Based on current product offerings, it is unlikely to significantly alter the landscape.

Considering iRobot’s potential exit, I suddenly had a thought: what if DJI were to acquire iRobot? While this scenario has zero practical likelihood, such an acquisition would be intriguing.
